LAW & ORDER: JUSTICE IS SERVED
Welcome to technical support for Law & Order: Justice is Served. Please take the time to read the answers to the frequently asked questions below. These answers may help resolve any issues you may have.
If you can't get the game to start or if you get a black screen after the introductory video of the crime scene...
There may be a problem with your video card working with the game.
Make sure to update your video drivers (directions below).
Make sure you have the latest version of DirectX. It can be downloaded from http://www.microsoft.com/windows/directx/default.aspx.
If your entire game is very slow or freezes after playing for a while...
Make sure you meet the minimum system requirements for the game. Specifically, make sure you have at least an 16 MB DirectX compatible video card, at least 128 MB of system memory, and at least 1.5 GB free disk space on the hard drive.
In the game, select Options from the Main Menu and turn off background animations and background audio.
Select the Options button from the main menu, and select 16 Bit Color Depth.
Make sure you have Java VM. It can be installed from http://www.java.com/.
Close down all other applications when running the program.
If other programs are interrupting your game...
It is strongly recommended to turn off all background applications when running graphically intensive programs. Background applications include such things as System Agent, Internet chat utilities, virus checkers and screen savers. Crash guard programs such as First Aid for Windows can also cause problems.
In Windows 98: To close your background applications, press CTRL+ALT+DEL once. This will bring up the Close Programs dialog box. To End Task on a program, highlight its name in the list and click the End Task button. End Task on all but Explorer and Systray.
If you are still having problems getting the game to work correctly...
First, update your drivers.
You should update your video card and audio card drivers often. Check with the manufacturer of your system or card to obtain the latest drivers. The majority of them have websites where the latest drivers can be downloaded for no charge, along with instructions on how to properly update their particular hardware. Driver sites for popular video cards include:
nVidia: http://www.nvidia.com/view.asp?PAGE=drivers%20
3dfx: http://www.voodoofiles.com/ (click 'drivers' button)
ATI: http://www.ati.com/support/drivers/powered.html
Matrox: http://www.matrox.com/mga/support/drivers/latest/home.cfm
Intel: http://developer.intel.com/support/graphics
If your card manufacturer isn't listed here, you can probably find your card manufacturer's web site by reading the documentation that came with your computer, or contacting your vendor.
Second, install Java VM from www.java.com.
Third, make sure your version of Windows is up-to-date. Microsoft's Windows Update page is: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/
If your sound is stuttering...
Be sure you have hardware and sound acceleration turned on. To turn on sound acceleration, go to your start button, select "run," then type in "dxdiag," select the "sound" tab, and pull the acceleration slider to the right. To turn on graphics acceleration, go to the "display" tab and be sure all of the DirectX acceleration features are enabled.
If you've found out about another character, but they didn't appear on the map...
It's likely that their name is on the map, but you have not seen it. Be sure to scroll the map down so you can access the lower part of it. Also check your phone, as some witnesses can only be reached by phone.
